Parent Update - August Issue 1

whats happening at mighty oak academy

We are now into our second week of school! We are excited to share with you what we've been doing and the plan for the next few weeks.

Week 1 Recap

Our first week of school was focused on everyone getting to know each other and their teachers.  We had morning assembly every morning with activities focused on introducing the students to each other and starting to learn how to build a team and a school family.  Check out this video for a recap of the first week!  We loved getting to know your kids!

1st Six Weeks

At Mighty Oak Academy we want to not only build a school family but ensure that every child is ready to learn. In order to do that we start each year with six weeks of what we call Social Emotional Learning. Below is our road map for the first six weeks. All of our lessons are broken down into two main sections, Regulate and Relate. First we learn to know that we are safe, and regulate our own emotions, then we learn to relate to each other. Once these two foundations are established we can then move on to our academic curriculum after week six. We have found that this program is even more needed now that we are returning to in person learning after more than a year of being out of the school building.

Below each section are the topics that are covered in that section. We have a short defiintion of each topic, so you can see what your child is learning in the classroom these first six weeks.

Regulate

  • Composure - we learn how to keep our cool in situations that are frustrating

  • Perceptions - we learn that things aren't always what they appear to be and we must look further before jumping to conclusions

  • Noticing - we learn to listen and see the people around us rather than judge them

  • Unity and Encouragement - we learn to come together and encourage and affirm one another

Relate

  • School Family - we learn what a school family is and how we treat each other

  • Respect - we learn what respect means to us and how we can show respect to others

  • Choices and Commitments - we learn that we all have choices and that we make commitments to each other at school like working to keep each other safe

  • Empathy - We learn how others feel

  • Positive Intent - we learn that we have good intentions when they interact with each other

  • Conflict Resolution - we learn how to solve conflict in a healthy way

Healthy habits

Sleep

We know that new routines can be hard, and it takes some time for everyone to adjust. One of the most important new routines for students coming back to school is to make sure they get enough sleep.

We have noticed the last few days that many of our students are going to bed late and coming to school extra tired. In order to have great days at school please help your students get to be early so they can get enough rest to be engaged and focused during the school day.

Cell Phones

Everyone has a cell phone now a days, and cell phone use by children has been shown to have an impact on children's brains. In order to promote an environment that helps children learn, we do not allow cell phones at school. We have noticed the last few days more students trying to use their phones during the school day. We do ask that students leave their cell phones, tablets and game system at home during the school day.

If you have an emergency and need to reach your child, the school phone is monitored throughout the school day. 502-272-0786

Candy

One of the pillars of the school is healthy food and we want to create an environment where everyone is included and has access to healthy yummy food. We have noticed the last few days a few students bringing candy in their back packs.

This creates a distraction in the classroom and goes against our healthy food policy. Students are given lunch every day and we also give a snack of fruit in the afternoon prior to dismissal.

2021 - 2022 School Calendar

Here is our 2021 - 2022 School Calendar. The first day of school and last day of school are highlighted in red. All Student holidays are highlighted in orange. The last day of school might change if we have an unexpected number of closures for snow over the winter.

Tuition:

First tuition payments will be due by the end August and then monthly thereafter. We will be contacting families individually regarding tuition payments.

If you have any questions please email: info@lovecityinc.org or call (502) 272-078.

We are so excited about this school year and can't wait to go on this journey of family and education with you and your children
